Joselu, Vinicius cannot replace Karim Benzema

One of the themes of Real Madrid's 2023/24 season will be how they make up for the playmaking ability, the exquisite class, and above all the goals that Karim Benzema took with him to Saudi Arabia during the summer.

Joselu has shown well off the bench in low-pressure situations as a super-sub. But in the start against Juventus, he did not look confident in tandem with Vinicius Jr., and missed two big chances, though neither was easy. But that's not what the fanbase will claim.

That selection leaves veterans Luka Modric (37 years old) and Toni Kroos (33 years old) on the bench, and Eder Militao battling for a centre-back spot with Antonio Rudiger. Joselu will likely be a sub in most matches, and perhaps a starter against La Liga's relegation strugglers.

It's still not a sure thing that Ancelotti's tactical system featuring Vinicius and Rodrygo at forward with Jude Bellingham behind them is a productive set-up. Having Bellingham in central midfield could be preferred with a front three of Vinicius-Rodrygo-Valverde, which we saw for stretches in 2022/23, as a more impactful combination.

The reality is that Bellingham was not exactly pulling the strings of the attack like a No. 10 against Barcelona and Juventus. So the days of the Bellingham attacking midfield experiment could be numbered. 

Juventus in transition and more changes could be coming

As for Juventus, their starting lineup has potential to create issues for opponents, but manager Max Allegri will need to use the 2023/24 season to find some reliable depth in the younger players currently on the team.

There's chatter about a potential Chelsea swap, with Dusan Vlahovic and Romelu Lukaku switching sides, and there's still time for that to be worked out. But Juventus are desperate for a dependable centre-forward entering the new season, whether Vlahovic stays or goes.

Federico Chiesa, Filip Kostic, and Matias Soule should create plenty of chances around the box, and Moise Kean and Arkadiusz Milik will put in honest shifts and make hard runs, but a regular box finisher is needed.

Especially without European competition, this Juventus team is capable of a top-four finish. But Milan, Napoli, and Inter have better squads and should finish higher in the Italian Serie A table. That leaves Roma, Juventus, Atalanta, and Lazio to battle it out for the fourth Champions League berth, and there's not one team from that foursome who's currently heads-and-shoulders above the others.
